Hans Scholl
Before he founded the White Rose, Hans Scholl was a leader in the Hitler Youth, but later became disillusioned by the Nazi Regime (Kater). According to Inge Scholl, “when… [Hans] returned [from the Nuremberg Rally], we could not believe our eyes. He looked tired and showed signs of a great disappointment. We did not expect any explanation from him, but gradually we found out that the image and model of the Hitler Youth which had been impressed upon him there was totally different from his own ideal... Hans underwent a remarkable change... This had nothing to do with Father's objections; he was able to close his ears to those. It was something else. The leaders had told him that his songs were not allowed... Why should he be forbidden to sing these songs that were so full of beauty? Merely because they had been created by other races?" (Simkin). His siblings joined him in leaving the Hitler Youth. Hans studied medicine at the University of Munich and went on to become the founder of and main writer for the White Rose (Kater).

Sophie Scholl
Sophie joined the girl division of the Hitler Youth, Jungmadel, but left with her brother (Axelrod). She hoped to become a kindergarten teacher, however, she almost didn't graduate high school because "Teachers had to pretend to be Nazis in order to remain in their posts” so she didn’t participate. “In the last two years, it was very difficult for me to accept any teaching at all, because I never knew how much the teacher believed in or not” said a girl who had escaped Germany at 16 (Simkin). After high school, Sophie finished her required war service in a munitions factory and enrolled in Ludwig Maximilion University. She became the treasurer, distributor, and "the heart of the group" according to Franz Mueller (Axelrod).
